Kings Park
and Botanic Garden
Like
most Australian cities, Perth is well
endowed with parks and gardens. The largest
of these, immediately west of the city
centre, is Kings Park, one of Australia's
most beautiful parks. Laid out in 1872 and
officially opened in 1895, it is finely
situated on Mount Eliza above the broad
river and the city. It has an area of 404 ha
(1003 acres), consisting partly of natural
bush country, with a brilliant display of
wild flowers in spring, and partly of a
botanic garden containing more than 1200
species of Western Australian plants.
The many grassed areas throughout the park
make it an ideal place for picnics, family
reunions, weddings, wedding photos or just a
place to relax and meditate.
The
Lemon Scented Gum Trees that line Fraser
Avenue, the main entrance to Kings Park,
were planted in 1937 and are one of the main
attractions in this special place.
Not only will you see the wild flowers but
the Park is also teeming with native birds
that are attracted to the flowers of the
native trees. You can get reasonably close
to the birds as they see many thousands of
people each year and are therefore not
overly afraid, so they are easy targets for
your camera.
How
about a walk among the tree tops while
enjoying some of the most spectacular views
in Perth. If this appeals to you, then walk
The Lotterywest Federation Walkway and get
some great Pictures of Perth.
Apart from the barbecues within the park you
can also enjoy first class food at Fraser's
Restaurant or you can call into the
Botanical Café, both are situated in Fraser
Avenue opposite the War Memorial.
The State War Memorial is situated in the
park overlooking the city and has a very
special place in the hearts of the people of
Western Australia.
The
Womens memorial is in Kings Park and the tree lined
avenues throughout the park are lined with
native trees that have been planted to
honour the many Australia soldiers killed in
action.
Don't
forget to pay a visit to Aspects of Kings
Park for that special gift. They have a good
range of gift ware for you to select from.
The Aboriginal Art Gallery is another place
to get that uniquely Australian gift to take
home.
Kings Park is a great place to get the
camera out and take a lot of photos. The
pictures you take of Perth from "The Park"
will be some of your best memories. Spend a
day in this wonderful area of Perth.
